Choosing the Right Keywords

How to get the Right Keywords

Getting the right keywords for your site can be a tricky process. Don't make the mistake that most web site owners do and guess what keywords people search for! Finding and using the most popular keywords can make or break the success of your website.

What are the Right Keywords for my web site? What are the most used keywords or most searched keywords that people look for in my area and market? What keywords should I optimize my web site for to draw in customers?

These are some very important questions you should be asking yourself if you want your web site to actually produce some good leads and in turn generate you more business. Keyword Research tools can help you to find the best keywords for your niche. There are tons of Keyword Research Tools out there that you can use - but my favorite is listed below for your FREE

Use the free tool below and find out what the Right Keywords are for your market. Then use those keywords in your front page copy, title, meta keyword description and sprinkle them throughout your entire site. Don't go over board though! Too many keywords can cause the search engines to think you are spamming them and they will bump you right out.

Here is how to find your best Keywords:

1. Use the tool below to search common phrases related with your area/city.
City
City + ST
City + State

See what the TOP keywords are in general for your area. This will help give you a better idea of where to begin in your market.

Then Search out terms related to your city AND related to your business. For instance in Real Estate you might search for keywords in this fashion:

City + Real Estate
City +ST + Real Estate
City + STATE + Real Estate

City + Home

City + Home
City + Homes
City + ST + HOME
City + ST + HOMES
City + State + Home
City + State + Homes

Then following the same format try things like:

Properties, MLS, Waterfront, Luxury, Foreclosures, etc.

Make a big list of all of the keywords you come up with and then narrow it down to your TOP 100 Keyword List. Once you have that - try to create groups of similar keywords. AND make sure they are related. For instance Jackson homes, Jackson MI homes, Jackson MI homes for sale, Homes in Jackson MI. These keywords are all closely related and by using closely related terms you have a better chance of getting to the first page of Google faster. Use your list to create groups of closely related keywords and build off your front page with different groups. For instance in my area - I might have a Jackson Homes page, a Brooklyn Homes page, a Grass Lake Homes page & a Michigan Center Home page. These pages would all go up in value for being singularly about a topic.

Keep in mind that the #1 mistake I come across when I talk to a new client is that they are trying to optimize their home page for every area they work. DO NOT make the mistake of putting too many keyword groups on one page - especially your home page. Trying to squash too many keyword groups into one page will make Google confused as to what your site is about and you will most likely be back on page 5 or 6 and wondering what you did wrong. We want Google to clearly understand your site when it reads it. If you haven't read my Search Engine Optimization Tips page - please do!

Once you have chosen these groups you will be ready to begin. These will be your core keywords to use throughout your site on the front page and also on all sub pages. Be sure to use them intelligently and not just throw them up on the page without any good written content. Otherwise they will do you no good. Something very important to also consider is NOT to copywrite other sites content and just put it up. Google has most likely already read that site and will recognized that you have stolen its content which may result in you getting removed.

Below is the Keyword search tool. Use it wisely and Good Luck!
